Eye Exams

Annual eye exams should be a part of everyone’s preventative health routine. Poor vision affects all aspects of a person’s life: school, work, athletics, and social encounters.
Vision changes often occur slowly. We may not realize how poor our vision has even become! Annual eye exams can detect vision changes before they can affect our life!

An infant should have their first eye exam at 6-12 months of age. This will detect any problems that could have lasting vision loss, such as crossed eyes or amblyopia (“lazy eye”). If no problems are detected, a child’s next eye exam should be before entering kindergarten. Annual eye exams should then become a part of every person’s routine. Glasses and contact lenses can correct poor vision. Surgery can also be recommended when needed.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Diseases

Everyone wants healthy eyes and good vision. Annual eye exams are the best way to keep our eyes healthy. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, eye problems occur. Eye infections are common, especially during school months. Most infections need medicine to get better. Some people are prone to styes, some of which may improve on their own, but some require antibiotics. Dry eyes are very common in dusty, dry environments, like Amarillo, Texas! There are many treatments for dry eyes, and these are most effective when targeted at each person’s specific cause of dryness. Most people will develop cataracts at some point in their life. Some cataracts disrupt a person’s life enough that they want to have surgery to remove them to get back to their active lifestyle. With age, glaucoma and macular degeneration can occur. These need careful monitoring and treatment to prevent severe vision loss.

Eyeglasses

If you need vision correction, eyeglasses are a good option for many people. Trained opticians can help you select eyewear that fits your face well and sits in the proper position in front of your eyes. This is important for you to get the best vision possible with your new glasses. A well-fitting eyeglass frame that is properly adjusted to your face will give you comfortable vision all day long. The optician can also recommend lens options to optimize your vision. New lens materials will give you thinner lenses, even for high prescriptions! No need for the thick “Coke-bottle” lenses like your grandparents wore! Crizal anti-reflective coatings eliminate glare and the reflections that eyeglasses show in pictures. Crizal Prevencia blocks harmful UV and blue-violet light that we get from computers, notebooks and smart phones. These harmful light rays are believed to cause cataracts, macular degeneration, and premature aging of the eyes. Varilux lens products reduce the distortions that many no-line bifocals have, so even people who failed with no-line bifocals before can successfully wear them now. No-one wants more lines! Time to try Varilux no-line bifocals! Put your new, thinner lenses in an attractive designer eyewear frame and you will see well and look great! And don’t forget to get a pair of sunglasses to protect you from harmful UV radiation! If you want an option for a pair of glasses that will double as sunglasses, consider Transition photochromic glasses. Your lenses will change from clear to sunglasses in a few seconds in sunlight, and back to clear again when you come inside.

Contact Lenses

If you prefer not to wear glasses all the time, contact lenses may be an option. New technology has created many contact lens options so most people can successfully wear contact lenses now. You can get soft contact lenses to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and soft toric contact lenses for astigmatism. Soft contact lenses are available for bifocal wearers, even those with astigmatism! If you want contacts that are virtually care-free, consider daily disposable soft contact lenses. Wear them all day and toss them in the trash! What could be easier and more hygienic? Some people need a gas-permeable rigid contact lens for the best vision. New materials make these lenses “breathe”, allowing healthier oxygen transmission to the eye. You can even get them with a soft contact surrounding the gas-permeable lens center for patients who like the crisp vision a rigid contact lens gives but cannot tolerate the feel of it. Patients with conditions like keratoconus or after surgeries like RK or lasik may get better vision with special contacts made to fit irregular corneas. Often, these specialized contact lenses provide patients with significantly better vision than glasses or regular contacts can give.
